Tobacco use and cessation in the context of pregnancy and postpartum: Current research, messaging and support for women and gender diverse individuals.
Date & Time: January 26th, 2026 - 12:00-12:30 PM PST
The Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health conducts policy and health service research with the goal of improving women’s health and advancing gender equity. For almost three decades CEWH researchers have studied tobacco as part of its work to contribute to the building of sex and gender science, to apply sex and gender-based analysis+ (SGBA+) in order to identify the differential impacts of gendered norms, identities and stereotypes on the health and well-being of women, girls, men, boys and all gender groups, and to bring attention to gender transformative solutions that increase gender specific knowledge, undermine gender stereotyping, and reduce gender blindness in health programs and policies.
This presentation will cover recent research by CEWH researchers related to nicotine vaping during pregnancy and postpartum, highlighting where women actively sought information, how they weighed up pros and cons of use, and their strategies in the face of stigma and misinformation. In addition to discussing the implications of the nicotine vaping research, attention will be shared on knowledge products that provide up to date information for service providers related to the effects of tobacco use (smoking and vaping) in pregnancy and when breastfeeding.
